Are you new to the Society for Creative Anachronism?
First of all: Welcome! The SCA is a great place to make wonderful friendships, learn unique new skills, share knowledge and have a lot of fun doing so. It can also be very confusing for a newbie: What do all those terms mean? How should I address people? What should I wear? Where can I find out information on how to make this great garb/armour/artwork that I have in mind? Fear not gentle friend, we have your back.
The Kingdom of Lochac has a Hospitaller page for helping newcomers to the Society. It is well worth a read.
What is the Society?
- SCA Inc (Parent Organisation)
- SCA Ltd (Australian Organisation)
- Kingdom of Lochac (Australia and New Zealand – the ‘in game’ side of the Society)
What to Say
- Watch this space – it’s hard to know where to start.
What to Wear
Participants are required to ‘make an attempt at pre-1700’ clothing. This means that you can wear something simple, or if you skills and/or budget stretch further, a detailed 16th Century item of ‘garb’. We refer to our clothing as ‘garb’ rather than ‘costume’ as it is made to facilitate living ‘in period’.
What to Eat
The food that was eaten pre-1700 varied considerably depending on the season, your location and your social status. For those who want to show their cooking skills there is a vast array of translated recipe books on the internet.
There are however some simple items that seemed to transcend time, such as bread in all its forms, barbeque chickens (spit roast), cheeses, fruit.
